Argentina

Walmart Argentina began in August 1995 with a Sam’s Club in Avellaneda, near Buenos Aires. The first Supercenter opened nearby a few months later. In October 2007, we announced the acquisition of three Auchan stores in Argentina, and as a result, we’ve converted stores in La Tablada, Quilmes and Avellaneda into Walmart Supercenters. The current President and CEO of Walmart Argentina is Ezequiel Gómez Berard. Our headquarters are located in Buenos Aires. Community We are proud to support our local communities and in 2008 raised and contributed more than US$395,000 through company, associate and customer donations.
We support hunger relief through the Cáritas Argentina Program for Nutritional Support. We provide food and funding to feed 11,800 people at 29 locations every month throughout the year. We partnered with Pampers in 2006 to develop the “Learning is Growing” campaign. This initiative provides nutrition workshops for mothers and those responsible for young children. Specialists from the CESNI (Study Center on Child Nutrition) provide training on essential aspects of child nutrition, hygiene and food science and the proper use of food during pregnancy and early childhood. SustainabilityTogether with Coca-Cola, we launched the Transforming Optimism recycling campaign. We invite our customers to bring their PET bottles to recycling stations at our stores. The company donates the recycled materials to build playground equipment at nearby schools. Thanks to the Let’s Buy with Awareness campaign, more than 5,800 customers and schools worked together to compile a list of tips to promote sustainability, encouraging the community to actively reflect on environmental protection. We placed the tips in our stores to help customers buy responsibly. OpportunityDuring the fourth quarter FYE09, we created nearly 450 new jobs by opening a new Supercenter in the Tucuman province and two Changomas stores in the Neuquén and Tigre provinces (Greater Buenos Aires). We plan to open 12 to 15 new stores in the next year, creating more than 2,000 jobs. Through our PyMe program, we help identify and develop local companies become productive, regional suppliers. Today, more than 150 of these companies sell their products in Walmartluding cheese, pasta, fresh eggs, milk, yogurt, desserts and ice cream.
