Brazil
In 1995, Walmart opened two Supercenters and three Sam’s Clubs in Brazil. Many more have opened since, including Todo Dia stores, a neighborhood format designed for our Brazilian customers. In March 2004, we expanded by acquiring 118 Bompreço stores and in December 2005 acquired 140 Sonae stores. The current President and CEO of Walmart Brazil is Héctor Núñez. Our headquarters are located in Sao Paulo. For more information, please visit http://www.walmartbrasil.com.br Community We are a proud member of the communities we serve. In 2008, we gave more than US$7.5 million in corporate, associate and customer donations. In July 2008, the Walmart Institute started its first local development program in Bomba do Hemetério, a community of 12,500 in Northeast Brazil. The “Bombando Cidadania” (Pumping Citzenship) Program focuses on education, health and culture through social and income generation projects, in partnership with NGOs, local government and others. In May 2008, we held our second Community Day, when associates made a difference in our local communities by volunteering. A total of 8,500 associates– a 37 percent increase from 2007 – donated nearly 51,000 hours. Sustainability Brazil Eco-Efficient Hypermarket In June 2009, we held a Sustainability Summit - "Pacts for Sustainability - Building the Supply Chain of the Future." The pacts were built with the federal government and the supply chain, through discussions also involving NGOs, associations and experts. The focus of the summit was new business models for the meat, soybean and timber supply chain in Brazil with the goal of avoiding deforestation, committing to responsible purchases and waste reduction. In 2008, we opened our first eco-efficient Supercenter in Campinho, a city on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. It combines more than 60 sustainable initiatives, the most ever in a Brazilian store. The store is expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 25 percent and water consumption by 40 percent. We partnered with Conservation International, donating US$2.3 million to preserve the 457-hectares National Forest of Amapá, also known as Flona. We are working to make Flona a model of sustainable use of resources in the Brazilian Amazon. Opportunity By the end of 2009, more than 10,000 new positions will be created and more than 90 new stores will have been open. We provide opportunities for local industry to export their products all over the world. Candies, corned beef, chocolate, crackers, towels, bed clothes, shoes, colored pencils, pet toys and furniture are some of the top items that Walmart Brazil exports to countries such as United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, England, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guatemala. We also provide opportunities for local agricultural producers. Through the Producers’ Club program, a partnership launched in 2008 with small and medium farmers, we help families bring their products to market. Currently, there are more than 5,000 families taking part in the Producers’ Club in eight states in south and northeast Brazil. We offer affordable generic pharmaceutical drugs for US$5.75, making medication easily accessible. In 2008, savings generated by the program totaled more than US$12 million.
