China

We began our retail operations in China in 1996 with a Supercenter and Sam’s Club in Shenzhen. Neighborhood Markets soon followed, and in February 2007, Walmart China invested in the hypermarket chain Trust-Mart, which operates more than 100 retail units. In January 2009, we celebrated the launch of its newest format, Smart Choice.

The current President and CEO of Walmart China is Ed Chan. Our headquarters are located in Shenzhen. For more information, please visit http://www.Walmartchina.com.

We have pledged more than US$3 million to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquakes. As part of this pledge, we committed $876,000 to rebuild schools, US$730,000 to a countryside clinic program and US$365,000 to purchase ambulances in the earthquake zone. Our associates, customers and suppliers have also been working together to raise funds, which currently exceed US$730,000.

In September 2008, we donated $8,400 to 15 needy but outstanding college students in Shenzhen. The event, named “Let Eagles Spread the Wings,” was launched by Shenzhen Charity Federation in August 2005, and we carried out the promise of sponsorship of four-year tuition fees to those 15 students.

Sustainability

In October 2008 in Beijing, China, we took the next step in our sustainability journey by hosting an unprecedented gathering of more than 1,000 leading suppliers, Chinese officials and NGOs. Our leadership outlined a series of aggressive goals and expectations to build a more environmentally and socially responsible global supply chain, sell sustainable products in China and around the world and to become the best-in-class sustainable retailer in China by applying Walmart’s sustainability vision to its China operations.

We are working to stay at the leading edge of sustainable store practices and opened our first eco-friendly and energy-saving store in Beijing in September 2008. Compared with baseline stores in 2005, the new stores consume 23 percent less power and realize a 17 percent water consumption savings after installing LED lights, energy-saving and heat reclamation equipment and energy management systems, among other others.
