China
We began our retail operations in China in 1996 with a Supercenter and Sam’s Club in Shenzhen. Neighborhood Markets soon followed, and in February 2007, Walmart China invested in the hypermarket chain Trust-Mart, which operates more than 100 retail units. In January 2009, we celebrated the launch of its newest format, Smart Choice. The current President and CEO of Walmart China is Ed Chan. Our headquarters are located in Shenzhen. Community We have pledged more than US$3 million to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquakes. As part of this pledge, we committed $876,000 to rebuild schools, US$730,000 to a countryside clinic program and US$365,000 to purchase ambulances in the earthquake zone. Our associates, customers and suppliers have also been working together to raise funds, which currently exceed US$730,000. In September 2008, we donated $8,400 to 15 needy but outstanding college students in Shenzhen. The event, named “Let Eagles Spread the Wings,” was launched by Shenzhen Charity Federation in August 2005, and we carried out the promise of sponsorship of four-year tuition fees to those 15 students. In July 2009, we announced that we have become a Pavilion Partner of the USA National Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The announcement was made at our flagship high efficiency store in Beijing with the participation and support of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, who was on his first visit to China since being appointed by President Obama. Sustainability In March 2009, we actively responded to the “Earth Hour” launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) with P&G and HP through a weeklong promotion of "Earth Hour" in 245 of our stores across 74 cities nationwide. One-third of lighting in our stores nationwide and offices were turned off during the event. We received a special award from WWF China for our efforts. In April 2009, a Corporate Innovation and Sustainability Capacity Building training program hosted in conjunction with Agenda 21 was kicked off in our Home Office. Approximately 200 managers and staff from several dozen of our suppliers attended the three-day training on corporation innovation, corporate social responsibility and energy efficiency. Solar energy in use at a home in Jiaxing city In Oct. 2009, Walmart China and ACCA21, a public institution under the direct administration of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a “Sustainability Contest,” The two sides agreed to have solid cooperation in the areas of sustainable development. By launching the “Walmart Cup” Youth Technological Innovation Competition, they hope to increase young people’s awareness of independent innovation, energy-saving and emission reduction, and to encourage them to become active in technological innovation, applying the potential innovation results to serve the sustainable development of the retail industry.
