Japan

In May of 2002, Walmart acquired a 6.1 percent stake in Seiyu. In December 2005, we acquired a majority interest in Seiyu, making Seiyu a Walmart subsidiary, and in December 2007, we increased our ownership stake of Seiyu from 50.9 percent to 95.1 percent. We are now working to acquire all of the remaining shares, which will result in the delisting of Seiyu shares from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The current President and CEO of Seiyu is Ed Kolodzieski. Our headquarters are located in Tokyo. For more information, please visit http://www.seiyu.co.jp/index.shtml.

Community

Japan flag

We believe in operating globally and giving back locally. We know we can make the greatest impact on our communities by supporting causes that are important to our customers and our neighborhoods. In 2008, Seiyu donated more than US$200,000 to the communities we serve.

In 2008, we donated US$146,000 to the National Federation of All Japan Guide Dog Training Institutions. The funds are used to help raise and train guide dogs, as well as promote awareness among the general public about the needs of visually-impaired individuals.

Associates and customers donated US$33,000 to support areas affected by the earthquakes that occurred in China in May 2008.

Sustainability

In June 2008, we raised and donated US$18,600 to Energy Fund Co. Ltd, which helped install a solar panel on the roof of a kindergarten.

Opportunity

We have a specific program to source fresh produce items from local suppliers. More than 75 percent of our stores have a section in the stores for fresh produce delivered directly and daily by local growers. For these items, customers are able to identify the items’ growers and places of origin.
