United Kingdom

ASDA traces its roots back to two Yorkshire brothers, Peter and Fred Asquith, and a group of Yorkshire farmers who formed Hindell's Dairies in northern England in the 1920s. In 1965, Asquith and Dairies joined forces to form ASDA. In June 1999, ASDA was acquired by Walmart and has grown into Britain’s second largest supermarket.

The current President and CEO of ASDA is Andy Bond. Our headquarters are located in Leeds. For more information, please visit http://www.about-asda.com/

Community

United KingdomIn 2008, ASDA raised or contributed more than US$12 million for charities and local communities in the United Kingdom.

The following initiatives represent some of the ways ASDA is supporting its communities:

  • ASDA Sporting Chance, launched in 2008, is our biggest-ever commitment to community grassroots sports and the start of a five-year legacy of supporting young emerging athletes. More than 60,000 kids took advantage of free local sports sessions during school holidays and overall, more than 7 million free sport vouchers were handed out to customers throughout the holidays in 2008.
  • We raised US$545,000 for the charity Tommy's, which funds research and provides information on the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth. Since 1999, our stores have raised more than US$3 million through pin badge sales, fundraising and product donations.

Sustainability

ASDA recylesAs part of our commitment to monitor and improve the conditions under which our products are produced, we hosted our first ethical trading conference for suppliers at our Merchandising Centre of Excellence in Morley, West Yorkshire, in February 2009.

Led by ASDA’s ethical sourcing team and addressed by Rt. Hon. Ed Balls MP (Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families and MP for Normanton), the conference brought together 300 of our leading private label suppliers, Yorkshire businesses and other key stakeholders to improve ethical business standards across the supply chain.

In partnership with the Gangmasters Licensing Authority, Unite, the Garment and Leather Workers Federation and Anti-slavery International, ASDA shared best practices with suppliers to ensure they are effectively equipped to address ethical sourcing issues.

Milk bottles at ASDA got a green makeover with the launch of an innovative recycled cardboard version: the first milk bottle in the UK to be 91 percent recycled (from waste office paper) and 99 percent recyclable. The two liter milk bottle, created by GreenBottle, has a carbon footprint that is 48 percent lower than that of plastic.

In October 2008, ASDA launched its flagship low-carbon store in Bootle, Liverpool. This is ASDA’s most energy efficient store, using 40 percent less energy and emitting 50 percent less carbon. It also creates practically zero waste.

Opportunity

Our UK ASDA Income Tracker helps provide us with a platform for leadership on this issue. This is a monthly barometer of the nation's finances, tracking the amount of money people have left each month to spend on leisure and fun. It uses official government statistics but tailors them to unveil the true cost of living and reports a more meaningful rate of inflation. The tracker allows ASDA to promote the importance of value retailers in minimizing inflation and lowering the cost of living for British families. It also acts as an internal motivator to buyers who better understand why they are trying so hard to lower prices each day.

We announced in January 2009 we will create more than 7,000 new jobs this year and will recruit up to 3,000 long-term unemployed people for existing vacancies through Local Employment Partnerships and Remploy – our recruitment partner for people with disabilities and health conditions.

The move will help provide full- and part-time roles to thousands of people who have been unemployed for more than six months and are finding it difficult to re-enter the labor market.
