India

In August 2007, Walmart announced an agreement with Bharti Enterprises to establish a joint venture, Bharti Walmart Private Limited, for wholesale cash-and-carry and back-end supply chain management operations in India. Our first BestPrice Modern Wholesale opened in May 2009. Over the next seven years, we expect to open 10 to 15 BestPrice Modern Wholesale cash-and-carry facilities and employ approximately 5,000 people.

A typical BestPrice Modern Wholesale will include 50,000 - 100,000 square feet and sell a wide range of fruits and vegetables, groceries and staples, stationery, footwear, clothing, consumer durables and other general merchandise items.

As a wholesale cash-and-carry business, we will continue to work with and develop local suppliers, creating local beneficiaries within our supply chain. We are one of the top two sourcing retail companies from India, often helping small- and medium-sized enterprises transform into exporters with access to global markets over time.

The current President and CEO of Walmart India is Raj Jain.

Community

India flag

We have adopted four schools for underprivileged children: the Satya Bharti Schools in Amritsar, Punjab. Each enrolls more than 200 children every year. We expect to work with associates who contribute time, money and in-kind donations.

Sustainability

Our BestPrice Modern Wholesale cash-and-carry buildings have been constructed with fly ash and have skylights for harnessing daylight. The parking areas have been fitted with grass grid panels for rainwater harvesting. The air-conditioning system is water-cooled instead of air-cooled, helping conserve energy. Water from sewage treatment plants is used for air-conditioning and gardening.

Opportunity

In a public-private partnership with the Punjab government, we have pioneered a training center in Amritsar. The first of its kind in India, the Bharti Walmart Training Centre offers students world-class skills training and exposure to best practices in retail and cash-and-carry operations. Students receive vocational education that equips them to become floor and sales assistants or supervisors at wholesale cash-and-carry and retail ventures. More than 300 students have enrolled so far, and the Centre expects even more in the future.
