Walmart Puerto Rico launched its first Hurricane Tour in August of 2008 in a joint effort with the State Emergency and Disasters Management Agency. Free educational sessions on what to do before, during and after a hurricane were held in Walmart Supercenters, Sam’s Clubs and Supermercados Amigos across the island. Sustainability
We held our first Sustainability Forum in March 2009. The forum brought together diverse sectors in a collaborative effort to promote sustainability on the island. Among the topics discussed in the forum were global warming and its effect on the island, initiatives and actions to diminish our environmental impact, the importance of sustainability in the local market, renewable energy and solid waste, reforestation and environmental conservation, as well as the initiatives we developed through our Sustainable Development Program launched in 2006. During the summer of 2008, we opened two Supercenters with sustainable features. The supercenters, located in Ponce and Canóvanas, use energy saving features such as LED lights in all refrigerator doors, system dimming of lights using exterior lighting sensors, cooling systems that use minimal refrigerant and automatic bathrooms that use less water. The company’s recycling program, “Tómatelo en serio, recicla por Puerto Rico” has been recognized for involving nearly 80,000 students in a massive recycling contest around the island.
