Associates Give Local Children Their Own Place to Sleep and Play

Truck Convoy
The entire family joined our truck drivers for a truck ride to our Apple Valley store.

At night, the four children in one California family now sleep in their own separate beds. By day, the kids play together on their brand new swing set. For so long, this was merely a dream for Jose, a father struggling to support his family while out of work due to injury. Walmart truck drivers, managers, warehouse and store associates in Apple Valley teamed up to help Jose’s family live a better life –which includes 15-year-old Zulie, who has Down’s syndrome.

In November 2008, Walmart purchased four double beds for the family, and associates donated enough bedding for all the children to sleep soundly. Our Victorville store donated the swing set, and several other local stores give cash and gifts as well.

Part of something larger

It was all part of Walmart Heart, a volunteer program one of our drivers started to help people with chronic medical conditions. Beyond helping make the family’s home a happier place, we also donated $2,500 to Zulie’s school for items needed for her education.

To celebrate the occasion, the entire family joined our drivers for a truck ride to our Apple Valley store. It was a convoy that, according to one local official, rivaled that of the U.S. President’s when he’s in town! Associates greeted the family with signs, banners and cheers. Jose’s reaction? “I promise you,” he said, “I will never forget this day for the rest of my life.”
