 D&S Hiper Lider hypermarket in Santa Amalia We acquired a majority stake in Distribución y Servicio D&S S.A., Chile's leading food retailer, in January 2009. With 2007 net revenues in excess of US$3.8 billion, D&S has more than 180 stores, 10 shopping centers and 85 PRESTO financial services branches. D&S began as a family-owned operation led by Manuel Ibáñez Ojeda in 1957 with its first supermarket, Almac. The current President and CEO of D&S is Enrique Ostale. With headquarters in Santiago, D&S has more than 34,500 associates and operates under a number of different formats, including hypermarkets Hiper de LIDER, supermarkets Express de LIDER, Super Bodega Acuenta and Ekono convenience stores. In 2008, D&S invested US$1.5 million in community initiatives and US$5 million in conjunction with community partners. Last year, D&S created new jobs by opening Ekono and super bodega Acuenta stores. D&S’ launched “Por un Chile Líder Educamos,” a healthy lifestyles program, in conjunction with local schools to reduce obesity. American and Chilean Commerce named it the best program in 2008. Since 1996, D&S’s “Leave Your Change in Good Hands with Hogar de Cristo” has raised US$2 million annually. Sustainability In September 2009, we opened the first environmentally friendly supermarket in the country with energy efficient, state-of-the-art technology. Over the past three years, we have improved our electric energy efficiency, reducing energy usage by 5 percent annually. We received a national award for this in 2008. In June 2008, we launched the 3Rs: Reducing, Recycling and Reusing for plastic bags. D&S is the first supermarket in Chile to sell reusable bags, working to reduce plastic bag waste by 50 percent by 2011.
