Sam's Club Training & Development

Whether it’s your first day as a Sam’s Club Associate or you’re moving up in your career, the goal of our training and development program is to provide you with the tools to succeed. This begins with an in-depth orientation where you learn about the history, the successes and the aspirations of the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club “family.” We want each of our Associates to understand their valuable role in fulfilling our mission to improve lives, one member at a time. New Associate OrientationOn your first day with Sam’s Club, you and the other new Associates beginning on this day will experience a “virtual tour” of a Sam’s Club by participating in our Learning Map section of Orientation. The “Map” allows you to follow along as you learn about the history of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, our unique Company Culture, our very important members and how your job plays a vital role in your Club’s success. You also learn to see the Club through the Member’s eyes by “shopping” for them and making decisions like they might. After orientation, each department has its own training plan that provides each Associate with the knowledge and tools they need to do their specific job well. Here are just a few of the programs from the comprehensive training we offer Sam’s Club Associates: Cashier Simulated Training (CST) for Sam’s ClubCashiers in our Cashier Simulated Training (CST) program achieve measurable performance results two full weeks sooner than those who do not receive this training. Through a Computer Based Learning (CBL) system, our associates learn register operations through muscle memory training and simulated transactions, On the Job Training (OJT) and Job Aids, which are all connected by a Cashier Development Plan. To complete the training, Associates must demonstrate proficiency in technical and Member service skills. Summer Internship Program OverviewIf you’re interested in business, then the best way to learn is by participating. Through the Sam’s Club Internship program, your field-based experience will allow you to do just that. The program is focused on three main initiatives; giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning to “real world” situations, expose students to the variety of operations in a retail / wholesale setting and possibly begin a career with Sam’s Club. This 12-week program is designed to expose trainees to the various operations within Sam’s Club, allowing them to rotate through Operations, Human Resources, Food and Non-Food Merchandising, Accounting and Auditing, Front End Operations, Membership, and Marketing Upon completion of the program, students will be given the opportunity to present a business plan with recommendations on how to improve one area of our retail operation. Manager in Training (MIT)This 12-week program is designed to expose trainees to the various operations within Sam’s Club, allowing them to rotate through Operations, Human Resources, Food and Non-Food Merchandising, Accounting and Auditing, Front End Operations, Membership, and Marketing. Upon completion of the training program, trainees may apply for Assistant Manager positions within our facilities. Fresh Food Academy of ClassesThis Fresh Food Academy of Classes gives functional training to Team Leaders and Assistant Managers for Meat, Deli, Rotisserie, Bakery, Café, Produce, and Floral Departments. There are currently four, 2-day classes that combine classroom learning with in-club, on-the-job skills training. Participants learn all facets of fresh operations, including the importance of food safety, fresh production planning, ordering fresh merchandise, backroom organization, sales floor presentation, inventory tracking, financial management, cost inventories, and reading profit & loss statements. As a result of these classes, participants will be able to increase their sales and profits, improve Member satisfaction, and incorporate food safety principles in all aspects of fresh operations. Engagement SchoolAt Sam’s Club, we know that it’s important to feel good about your job. Retention, morale, and productivity are directly linked to how engaged our Associates are in the workforce. In order to maintain a motivated workforce, we have developed Engagement School for our Club Managers. This program provides them with the skills they need to increase engagement within our workforce by examining environmental and leadership factors that impact how our Associates feel about working for us. It gives our managers the time to step back and examine their own leadership style and learn how they can become a more effective leader within our company. Leadership DevelopmentWe know that to become an effective leader of other people, you need to learn how to communicate effectively, motivate others, translate business plans into actionable items, train your people, coach them for success and hold them accountable, and that’s just the beginning. Being a leader in Sam’s Club is a rewarding experience. To prepare you for this experience, we offer “I’m A Leader” training for our Team Leads (launching in 2008), Leadership Development Series 1 and 2 for Team Leads and Management, Engagement School for all Management, Co-Manager School for Co-Managers and many other leadership development offerings. Learning the skills of leadership is an ongoing pursuit, and Sam’s Club University is there to assist along the way.
