Undergraduate Personal & Professional Development
Interns can take part in the many developmental activities we offer to our full-time associates. Here is a look at some of the programs that will help interns throughout their internship with Walmart. Touring the Distribution Centers (DCs) Interns get to experience many things about Walmart, including the opportunity to tour the two local distribution centers we have in Bentonville, Ark. At these distribution centers (DCs), interns learn which type of products each DC takes to each store, how they transport products efficiently and how the equipment and tracking systems work. This is a great opportunity to see how Walmart operates behind the scenes.
Visiting the Innovation LabMany leading technology companies, such as Microsoft, Apple and IBM, come to Walmart’s Innovation Lab to showcase technology no one else has seen. Interns have the opportunity to visit the lab throughout their internship to see the latest in cutting-edge technology. Shareholders' Week As an intern you have the unique opportunity to participate in Walmart’s Shareholders' Week. The week consist of concert events open to associates and the public, designed to engage, develop and grow the company culture. Walmart’s international associates, as well as visitors from across the company enjoy the week, attending supplier fairs, touring Walmart’s Home Office in Bentonville and the Walton 5 & 10 Visitors' Center.

Intern Development DayCampus Relations plans a half-day for the interns to go to the Walton Life Fitness Center. Interns can play games such as volleyball, basketball and wallyball. It is a day of team-building that helps interns meet each other and interact with those from different departments. Intern-Versus-Executive Softball Game The intern-versus-executive softball game is a tradition at Walmart that goes back more than 10 years. At the beginning of their internship, interns challenge top executives to a softball game. The game happens at the end of the program after both teams have practiced for the big day! This is a good way for interns to interact with executives and, of course, both teams are extremely competitive so it is a fun game to watch.
CommitteesBefore starting an internship with Walmart, interns can join a committee within the internship program: Social Committee – The social committee organizes all of the interns’ after-work activities such as canoe trips, ball games and rafting, making interns feel welcome. Charity Committee – The charity committee selects a charity the interns will support throughout the summer. This summer, we supported Horses for Healing, a local organization that helps developmentally challenged children grow and learn through horse riding and educational activities. The interns coordinate all fundraising activities, working closely with the sports team and marketing committees to raise funds. Sports Team Committee – The sports team committee participates in the intern-versus-executive softball game to raise money for the interns’ chosen charity, practicing multiple times after work before the big day! Marketing Committee – The marketing committee works with the marketing department to design T-shirts, tickets, posters and other promotional materials for fundraising events. Its members work with several Walmart departments and outside vendors to do so. Proceeds go to the interns’ chosen charity. Concessions Committee – The concessions committee works with our buying team to contact suppliers for food, drinks and candy to sell during the event to benefit the charity. Mentor Me ProgramThrough this program, the interns are matched with a mentor who is a full-time associate that usually has worked for Walmart for several years. The mentor will help his/her intern explore options at Walmart, set goals for the internship, discuss career aspirations and set up job shadows. Most importantly, the mentor lends a helping hand whenever needed. Executive Speaker Series Lee Scott, former President and CEO, listens to an intern's question
Throughout the summer, top executives from each area of Walmart meet with the interns and talk about their experiences with leadership, growing with the company, work-life balance, and how to succeed in the corporate world.
