Distribution Center Intern - Abigail
In the morning I talk with my mentor about my projects’ progress and solicit advice. Overall, my projects involve finding ways to save Walmart Distribution Centers (DCs) money by performing financial analysis to justify buying equipment that will pay off in savings to the company and our customers. I pull productivity information, look at AutoCAD drawings of our buildings, speak with our equipment vendors about prices and do time studies to see how long a process currently takes. Sometimes I even review past projects to get ideas for what kinds of improvements are available for our DCs. For lunch, I usually eat at the DC. The cafeteria has great food. You can order a burger or a quesadilla, hit up the salad bar or see what the daily option is. After lunch, I continue to work on my assigned projects, participating in conference calls with DC general managers and visiting other DC's in town. Currently, I have projects at a pharmacy DC, a fashion DC, a grocery DC and a regional DC. Throughout my internship with Walmart, I have learned a lot about self-development and career advancement. For example, I have attended intern presentations hosted by Walmart’s top executives, and I work with a mentor who makes sure I’m growing both professionally and personally. The internship also gives me the opportunity to give back to the community. I am on the charity committee, helping plan the intern- versus-executive softball game and other fundraising events. The hours are flexible, which allows me to take a class two days a week after work. During my free time I hang out at the pool at my apartment or play video games with the other interns. |

I arrive at work around 6:30 a.m., check my e-mail and prepare for the morning managers' meeting, which consists of socializing with my unit’s managers. I discovered right away that building relationships is very important, because it means getting the cooperation I need to do my job. During the managers’ meeting, managers from each area discuss their workload for that day and any other information the rest of the group should know. When it’s my turn to speak, I discuss the new equipment we are installing, its benefits and the impact during installation.
