Operations Intern - Leah, Undergraduate
When I hear something I am really interested in, I make a note to talk to the person responsible for the project. Walmart’s open door policy makes it really easy to approach people. In my department, lunch is normally planned as a group activity. We may choose to stay in the cafeteria or attend any of the other restaurants that are nearby. Lunch is normally a great way to network and learn more about co-workers and their outside work activities. In the afternoon, once or twice a week, I visit a store to learn more for my project. Typical work activities include:
In the evenings right after work I normally attend classes at the Walton Life Fitness Center. I take a beginning tennis class on Monday evenings and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I attend a fitness class with the other summer interns. Depending on the day of the week I might also participate in a social gathering in the evening with other interns. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday at the local golf club house, and afterwards, movie night at someone’s house. As we all get to know each other and learn about each other’s projects, we discover different ways that we can act as resources for each other. I am enjoying my internship because it is challenging and rewarding. I am networking with people from all over the U.S. and learning what to expect when I graduate and work full time. |

I normally wake up around 6:30 a.m. every day to be at work around 7:30 a.m. The mornings normally include a coffee run and catching up with the other people in my department. Often I have early-morning meetings and questions to ask people who were busy the previous afternoon. Around 8:30 a.m. the day normally settles down and I have time to check my e-mail and respond to any urgent requests. There is normally a team meeting in the morning. I may not always be a part of everything I hear, but participating in the meetings is a great way to learn how my department works with other areas.
