 It began with just three tractors and an idea to effectively and efficiently transport freight to Walmart Stores, as well as pick up merchandise at suppliers.
Now, 40 years later, Sam Walton’s vision has become the world’s largest retailer and one of the biggest transportation operations around the globe. With 8,000 drivers, 7,000 tractors and 53,000 trailers, our Private Fleet traveled 792 million miles last year, and did it as one of America’s safest fleets. Our Environmental Responsibility With one of the largest private trucking fleets in the world, we have a responsibility when it comes to protecting the environment. We’re continually searching for innovative ways to help reduce our trucks’ emissions, as well as America’s dependence on fossil fuels. Our goal is to make our fleet 100% more energy efficient by 2015. This goal includes keeping 26 billion pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air between now and 2020, with the hopes of impacting fuel efficiency across the industry. We’re proud of our advancements in trucking  Our new-generation trucks contribute to cleaner air in our communities, big cost-savings for our customers and industry-wide innovations in truck design. Many new partnerships were formed to innovate and improve our trucking performance. These partnerships have resulted in a truck designed with forward-thinking aerodynamics, transmissions, tires, a high-efficiency auxiliary power unit and emissions controls.
Here are just a few truck innovations you'll find on our equipment: Aerodynamic Tractor Package Making the tractor more aerodynamic radically reduces fuel consumption. Approximately two-thirds of all fuel currently burned by trucks can be attributed to overcoming aerodynamic resistance. Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) This APU eliminates the use of the tractor’s main engine for keeping our drivers warm or cool at night.
