Walmart College Success Award Winners

Twenty colleges recently received grants of $100,000 each from the Walmart Foundation to help them support students seeking to become the first college graduate in their families. These College Success Awards were funded by a $2.266 million Walmart Foundation grant to the Council of Independent Colleges.

Each award-winning CIC member college has demonstrated success in enrolling, retaining and graduation first-generation college students. Nationwide, only 24 percent of such students earn a bachelor’s degree, compared to 68 percent of students whose parents have done so.

The Walmart College Success Award winners have developed programs that boost first-generation student graduation rates. Some institutions focus on fulfilling the needs of specific first-generation students, such as those who are foreign-born, pursuing teaching careers, commuting or transferring from community colleges. Many of the winning schools help prepare students for college-level work and life away from home through transitional summer programs. Others provide mentoring, tutoring, career development, scholarships and stipends to help first-generation students earn their degrees. The Walmart Foundation grant will support these programs’ continued success as well as prepare a “best practices” publication to help other colleges recruit and educate first-generation students.

The winners are: Adrian College (MI), Bay Path College (MA), Bellarmine University (KY), California Lutheran University, Carroll University (WI), College of Idaho, College of Mount Saint Vincent (NY), College of Saint Benedict (MN), College of St. Scholastica (MN), Florida Memorial University, Illinois College, Juniata College (PA), Kalamazoo College (MI), Lesley University (MA), Manchester College (IN), North Central College (IL), Ripon College (WI), St. Edward’s University (TX), Wartburg College (IA), and Wiley College (TX).
