Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge
The Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge is a fun and educational program that teaches elementary school students about the importance of recycling while earning money for their schools! Participating schools earn $5.00 for every 60-gallon collection bag they fill with plastic shopping and grocery bags and bring to a local Wal-Mart store for recycling by March 31, 2009. Schools are grouped into regions. The three schools in each region to bring in the most collection bags win additional rewards: - 1st Place: $3,000

It is the most successful plastic bag recycling program of its kind. At this time, the Kids Recycling Challenge is open to K-6 elementary schools in the following states: Arizona Arkansas California Colorado | Idaho Montana Nevada New Mexico | Oregon Utah Washington Wyoming | Intermediate, middle, and high schools are not eligible at this time. We run the Kids Recycling Challenge on a school-wide basis - we can only have one contact per school. Schools are free to divide the contest and rewards among classes in any way they wish, though, but it is up to the schools to track each class' results. Recycled plastic grocery and shopping bags are currently being made into new consumer products such as clean new plastic shopping bags, outdoor decking and railing products, park benches, garden and lawn edging, and decorative tiles to name just a few. The level of competition in each region is determined by the number of participating schools. You can recycle plastic shopping and grocery bags of any color and type except black (black printing on the bags is ok-black bags are not). Be sure to remove everything from the plastic bags prior to recycling – including register receipts. We can also accommodate newspaper bags and dry cleaning bags, as long as they are clean, dry and empty. No, because fruits, veggies and other foods tend to contaminate the bags and jam the recycling machines. Bags are ready to be turned in when the recycling bin is full enough to tie the 60-gallon bag at the very top. At no time should any location weigh the bags before they will be accepted. Please note that Wal-Mart associates reserve the right to refuse any collection bags that they do not consider to be full. Checks will be mailed to participating schools in June 2009.
