Walmart Foundation Helps National Heroes Earn College Degrees

In celebration of Veterans Day 2008, the Walmart Foundation donated a total of $3.6 million to help the people who serve our country pursue higher education. Grants were awarded to 12 organizations whose programs help veterans get access to education, afford college, adjust to civilian life and successfully graduate. The American Council on Education (ACE) received $2.5 million of the total grant amount to support veterans’ assistance programs at 20 colleges and universities. The Foundation also awarded grants of $100,000 each to 10 colleges and universities to build on programs and resources that help veterans throughout their college careers. Finally, Student Veterans of America, a grassroots coalition of student veterans groups from colleges across the country, received $100,000 to establish additional chapters and support student veteran advocates nationwide. “The men and women who serve our country are our nation’s heroes,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “The Walmart Foundation is proud to support programs that help our veterans get the resources they need to succeed in their education and their transition back to civilian life.”
