At a time when more and more families are struggling to put food on the table, Walmart is partnering with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief charity, and enlisting its entire network of Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Club locations to help those in need. By the end of 2009, Walmart’s food donation program will roll out to all Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, allowing us to donate 90 million pounds of food -- the equivalent of 70 million meals – to families in need.

By giving nutritious produce, meat and other groceries, we’ll become one of Feeding America’s largest food donors. Additionally, the Walmart Foundation is donating $2.5 million in cash to the organization. Feeding America will use the money to increase its food banks’ warehouse capacity and purchase 20 new refrigerated trucks, which will transport food from Walmart stores to food pantries, soup kitchens and other partner agencies across the country.

Sam’s Club helped lead the way with food donation by piloting a similar program with Feeding America in October of 2006. Since then, Sam’s Club locations have given nearly 13 million pounds of food to those in need – the equivalent of 10 million meals. Sam’s Club locations alone expect to donate 25 million pounds of food to Feeding America food banks by the end of 2008.

These donations are another way we can carry out our promise, help people live better, especially in these unprecedented times of need. In fact, a recent survey found that demand at Feeding America’s food banks across the U.S. has risen 15 to 20 percent over the last year alone.
