National Giving Program Frequently Asked Questions
What types of organizations does the Walmart Foundation support through its National Giving Program?
A National Giving Program grant recipient is a program or initiative housed within a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. In addition, the ideal recipient has programs at multiple sites across the country or has the capacity to go to scale. On some occasions, the National Giving Program may fund the replication of a particularly innovative local initiative to other sites around the country.
What are the areas in which the Walmart Foundation focuses its support?
The Walmart Foundation funds organizations that address the unmet needs of people in our communities. The Walmart Foundation's area of focus include Education, Health & Wellness, Environmental Sustainability and Workforce Development / Economic Opportunity. The Walmart Foundation also has a particular interest in supporting the following populations: veterans and military families, traditionally underserved groups, the disability community and people impacted by natural disasters.
Does the program in my application have to align with one of the Foundation’s focus areas?
Yes. At this time, National Giving Program support will only be awarded to initiatives which align with one or more of our four focus areas or other interest areas.
What is an example of a recent grant awarded through the Walmart Foundation National Giving Program?
The Gateway to College program serves at-risk youth, 16 to 20 years old, who have dropped out of high school. The program gives students the opportunity to simultaneously accumulate high school and college credits, earning their high school diploma while progressing toward an associate degree or certificate. Gateway to College students are young people who do not fit well in a traditional high school setting and are a diverse group facing many challenges. Some are teen parents, foster youth, or students who have struggled with substance abuse. Gateway to College was originally developed in 2000 at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon and currently operates in 24 colleges and 14 states. The Foundation recently awarded Gateway to College a grant of $2,542,500 to support the replication of the Gateway to College program at four community colleges around the country. The Walmart Foundation grant will also support three Peer Learning Conferences, which are three-day gatherings of all Gateway to College partners.
If my organization is receiving funding through another Walmart Foundation program, can I still apply for funding through the National Giving Program?
Yes. Organizations are eligible for consideration in multiple Foundation programs simultaneously.
Can my organization receive funding from the National Giving Program twice in one year?
No. An organization can only receive National Giving Program support once per the Foundation’s fiscal year. The Walmart Foundation’s fiscal year begins each year on February 1st.
Can I request a product donation instead of a financial gift through the National Giving Program?
No. The National Giving Program only provides financial gifts.
Where can I request a product donation?
You can request a product donation at your local Walmart or Sam’s Club location. Product donations are awarded at the discretion of each Walmart and Sam's Club.
Does the National Giving Program sponsor educational institutions, such as local schools and institutions of higher education?
The National Giving Program supports these types of institutions by providing grants to qualifying, tax-exempt educational organizations. Such organizations often use grant funds for national competitions to which individual educational institutions can apply for financial support. Individual educational institutions may also apply for support through our Community Giving Program and our State Giving Program. Institutions seeking funding of $25,000 or more should review the eligibility requirements for the State Giving Program.
My organization has a pending 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Can I request funding?
No. Only organizations with a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status are eligible to request funding.
Is there a minimum grant size for the National Giving Program?
Yes. The minimum grant size for this program is $250,000.
Is there another program that provides grants less than $250,000?
Yes, the following programs provide funding below $250,000:
- The State Giving Program supports projects which are state-wide or regional in scope. Eligibility requirements and applications are available online.
- The Walmart Store and Sam's Club Giving Programs supports local initiatives. More information is available online and applications can be requested at your local Walmart or Sam’s Club location.
Should I mail additional materials to the Foundation in support of my Letter of Inquiry?
No. Provide only the materials specified in the National Giving Program Guidelines. Any additional materials will be considered as unsolicited proposals or promotional materials and will not be reviewed. If the Foundation has any questions about your LOI, a member of the Foundation team will contact the individual listed as the primary contact for your organization.
What happens if, after reviewing my LOI, the Foundation determines it is interested in my request?
If the Foundation is interested in your request, you will be invited to submit a full proposal. Guidelines for that proposal will be provided.
How long will it take for the Foundation to review my LOI?
Due to the large volume of inquiries we receive, the Foundation is unable to provide an exact timeframe during which we will complete LOI review. Foundation associates do their best to review and process materials received in a timely manner, ideally six to eight weeks.
