Walmart Foundation Supports U.S. Green Jobs
By 2028, 10 percent of job growth in the U.S. will likely be green, in positions that help sustain our environment, revealed a recent Global Insights study. To help prepare more Americans to take on these types of jobs , the Walmart Foundation has granted a total of $6.1 million to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Veterans Green Jobs and the Business and Professional Women's Foundation. These organizations will train workers for jobs in emerging green industries, including renewable electricity, alternative fuels, engineering and residential and commercial retrofits. A $5 million grant to the U.S. Conference of Mayors will help create jobs in a variety of emerging green industries. Through the Walmart Foundation’s donation, the Conference recently awarded six grants to nonprofit organizations that have a history of working with mayors to train people for green jobs. Later on, three more grants will be awarded in cities with new commitments to providing green workforce training. A $750,000 grant to the Veterans Green Jobs will help develop four green jobs training sites in Washington, Colorado, New Mexico and Louisiana. These sites will enable many of the almost 2 million former military personnel not only to face the challenges of returning to civilian life but to get the skills they need to pursue green jobs. An additional grant of $400,000 was awarded to the Business and Professional Women’s (BPW) Foundation to launch the “Moving from Red to Green: Working Women in the Green Economy” initiative. The initiative, aimed at connecting women to the green economy by providing green job training will establish a pilot program by awarding $60,000 grants to four organizations to expand their capacity to train women for green jobs. |
