Walmart Foundation Helps Many Families Prepare and File Taxes for Free in Difficult Times

The IRS estimates that one in five families don’t know that they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a credit for low-to moderate-income individuals and families. With a weak economy and job market, this tax season it’s likely that more Americans will qualify for the EITC and other refunds. As such, the Walmart Foundation has teamed up with United Way and One Economy (a non-profit organization that helps low-income Americans enter the economic mainstream) to provide eligible taxpayers free tax preparation and filing.

The Walmart Foundation’s $3.6 million grant to United Way and One Economy could return $300 million in EITC refunds, save $45 million in tax preparation fees and help about 225,000 households save money and live better during a difficult time. The grant funds United Way-supported Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) campaigns, One Economy’s online tools, and five Mobile Tax Center vans that will visit 30 locations across the country between February 10 and April 11, filing taxes for free for individuals earning less than $56,000 per year.

Associates benefit too

We’re also helping our own associates determine if they qualify for the EITC and notifying them about eligibility requirements. It’s another way we’re helping our people realize their potential - especially during this tax season.

Additional grant helps Real Economic Impact Tour

The Walmart Foundation has also awarded $25,000 to the National Disability Institute to support its national EITC campaign, the Real Economic Impact Tour. Since 2005, the program has helped more than 151,000 taxpayers with disabilities prepare their taxes for free.
