The 2009 Children's Miracle Hospital Network Champions Met President Obama Photo Courtesy Children's Miracle Network After facing life-threatening illnesses and injuries, 53 young “Champions” representing the Children’s Miracle Hospital Network met with President Obama in March 2009. These very special ambassadors – living testaments to the medical care Children’s Miracle Network hospitals provide across the country – were part of the Champions program presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club. Each year, the Children’s Miracle Hospital Network designates a Champion child in every state who has bravely triumphed over conditions such as brain tumors, leukemia, and cerebral palsy or survived injuries from car accidents or even plane crashes. Each Champion child acts as an ambassador for the hospitals that treated them, traveling with their family to Orlando, Florida for a Champion Celebration at Disney World, and to Washington, D.C. to meet with their Congressional representatives and senators. In 2009, honorees and their families got to visit Capitol Hill and the White House. They met with President Barack Obama, Miss America 2009 Katie Stam, and country music star Mark Wills. The children treated at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals hold a special place in the hearts of Walmart and Sam's Club associates who have raised $500 million to support the patients of Children’s Miracle Network hospitals since 1987.
