Disaster Preparedness

Regional Executive Director Maria White accepts a grant from Walmart Market Manager Leslie Thompson on behalf of the Granite Chapter of the American Red Cross in Concord, New Hampshire.

Although disasters are truly devastating events, preparation for them is something that can help save resources as well as lives. Recently, the Walmart Foundation helped communities across the country prepare for times of disaster with a $5 million grant to the American Red Cross.

Better prepared

Benefiting Red Cross chapters in 128 communities across 44 states and three U.S. territories, the grant is supporting the organization’s Disaster Readiness & Capacity Building Chapter Program.

Through this grant, 128 small and mid-size Red Cross chapters will become better prepared to respond to local disasters not only with supplies, but also with well trained personnel.

This funding will help train more than 1,000 Red Cross staff and volunteers, and purchase more than 55,000 blankets, 15,000 cots and nearly 150 shelter trailers. Every day, the Red Cross responds to such events, ranging from hurricanes, floods and tornados to smaller emergencies such as house and apartment fires.

Our long-standing support

At Walmart, helping communities is also what we do every day, and in times of crisis, our mission becomes an even greater priority. Our long-standing support of the American Red Cross is an important part of our disaster relief efforts.

In fact, Walmart is one of the organization’s most committed corporate partners: Donations from the Walmart Foundation, Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs exceeded $10 million from 2007 through 2009.
