Walmart Foundation Supports Communities Around the Globe
Now more than ever, the Walmart Foundation is proud to be able to help more people worldwide. As the economic crisis takes a toll on communities everywhere, we have stepped up our funding to much-needed community programs, especially those that address hunger, homelessness, education, job training and other basic needs. From February 1, 2008, through January 31, 2009, we gave more than $423 million in cash and in-kind donations globally – an $85.6 million increase over the previous year. Walmart and its international foundations are making a difference through charitable contributions locally in the communities where we operate.
In the U.S., standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbors on Main StreetThrough our food donation program, we’ve given 33 million pounds of fresh produce, meat and other nutritious foods to U.S. food banks. Walmart and Sam’s Club associates are rolling up their sleeves as well, donating more than a million volunteer hours last year. We’re not stopping there. In fact, we expect to log more than 1.5 million volunteer hours this year, thanks in part to mywalmart.com, a new Web site designed to help Walmart associates connect with one another, get involved in their communities and find local volunteer opportunities. Furthermore, we’re helping amplify associates’ impact with the Walmart Foundatin’s Volunteerism Always Pays program, awarding grant dollars to qualifying organizations in recognition of our associate volunteers.
