Walmart Foundation Awards More Than $8 Million in Scholarships to Help Students Pay for College

To help offset rising college tuition costs, the Walmart Foundation is awarding more than $8 million in academic scholarships to help students afford higher education in the coming school year. The 2,695 winners of the 2009 Sam Walton Community Scholarship will each receive $3,000 to use toward tuition, fees, books and on-campus room and board in 2009-2010.

This year’s scholarship students hail from all 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

The scholarships are especially important in a year when every dollar counts. According to the National Association of College and University Business Officers, U.S. colleges expect 20 percent more requests for financial aid, while funding for such assistance has fallen due to shrinking endowments and state budget cutbacks.
