Walmart and Sam's Club Giving $4.5 Million to Educators Through Its Teacher Rewards Program

Teachers across the country spent more than $1.33 billion out of pocket collectively on schools supplies, snacks and instructional materials during the 2009 to 2010 school year, according to the National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA), a trade association for educational product companies. As educators continue to dedicate their time and money in our youth’s future, Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations nationwide are investing $4.5 million in America’s teachers.

Through its Teacher Rewards program, Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide expect to give 45,000 educators gift cards to help teachers offset the cost of classroom expenses.

Teachers nurture, challenge and inspire our children to become future leaders, and through the Teacher Rewards program, we recognize those efforts - especially during tough economic times. Last year, top items purchased by teachers through the program included 19,000 packs of pens, pencils and crayons, 17,000 packs of paper, 13,000 packs of markers and 14,000 binders and clipboards, in addition to other essentials items—showing teachers need basic supplies to help support their classrooms.

Through the Teacher Rewards program, local Walmart stores, Distribution Centers and Sam’s Club locations across the U.S. are eligible to select one local kindergarten through eighth grade public school and provide $100 reward cards to 10 teachers from the selected school. Winning teachers are able to use the funds to purchase essential items for their classrooms.

In its third year, the Teacher Rewards program is an extension of Walmart’s ongoing support of education and local community involvement. In 2010, Walmart and its Foundation gave more than $89 million to fund educational, health and children’s programs to help students in communities across the country better prepare for their future.
