Walmart Foundation Announces United We Serve Grants to Assist Organizations Supported by Associate Volunteerism
In August 2009, the Walmart Foundation issued a challenge to Walmart associates (employees) across the U.S. to volunteer in their local communities. And they answered that call! During the six-week United We Serve challenge, associates volunteered nearly 16,000 hours at organizations across the country. The 10 organizations for which associates logged the most hours will each receive a $10,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The recipients are: - Animal Rescue Foundation of Bartlesville (Bartlesville, Okla.)
- Boyceville Community Schools (Boyceville, Wis.)
- Citizens League for Animal Welfare (Canton, Texas)
- Girl Scouts – Heart of Missouri Council (Springfield, Mo.)
- Grantsville Elementary School (Grantsville, Utah)
- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus (Columbus, Ohio)
- Hillsdale County Council for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (Hillsdale, Mich.)
- Rogers Youth Center, Inc. (Rogers, Ark.)
- Rossiter Volunteer Fire Company (Rossiter, Penn.)
- Shriners Hospital for Children of Tampa, Florida (Tampa, Fla.)
Grantsville Elementary fire damage Spotlight on grant recipient: Grantsville Elementary School On July 13, 2009, a fire broke out in one of the central lounges at Grantsville Elementary School in Grantsville, Utah. As emergency crews arrived at the scene and began to battle the blaze, it was apparent the fire was going to be devastating. Built in 1929, the school had antiquated sprinklers and ventilation systems; in the end, more than 70 percent of the building was ruined by fire, smoke and water damage. Over five weeks, 90 Grantsville-area Walmart associates volunteered more than 1,100 hours at the school. They painted, helped teachers prepare portable classrooms, moved furniture, inventoried supplies and participated in a supply and book drive. They also cooked for the teachers at a back-to-school barbeque and helped students navigate their new surroundings on their first day of class. Additional grant supports prevention of child abuse and neglect After the Walmart Foundation named the grant winners, associates also got to vote for one of the organizations to receive an additional $100,000 grant; they selected Hillsdale County Council for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (C.A.P.A.). A commitment to volunteerism The Walmart Foundation encourages associates to get involved in charitable organizations that matter to their families and the communities where they live and work. From repairing the elementary school in Utah to volunteering at a children’s hospital in Florida, associates’ passion for volunteering is truly helping many people live better lives.
