Walmart Gives Back for the Holidays
Learn what Walmart is doing to support: Walmart gives back with historic $32 million holiday giving campaign. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation launched “Walmart Gives Back,” our annual holiday giving campaign, with: - Deliveries to local food banks across the country for the holidays.
- We joined with Operation Homefront to ensure that 10,000 children of military families receive toys and books for the holidays.
- We also donated wreaths, trucks and resources to help Wreaths Across America lay 16,000 wreaths at national cemeteries and memorial sites across the United States.
Additional support is especially important in today's economy Executives from Feeding America, Meals On Wheels and Walmart packed Great Value-branded products and fresh apples onto 35 refrigerator trucks donated by the Walmart Foundation, then sent them out to help put meals on tables in communities nationwide. Feeding America estimates the trucks will help food banks provide an additional 52.5 million pounds of food - or 41 million additional meals - per year. These days, families and seniors who rely on food banks have been hit particularly hard. “As the country's largest grocer, it is important for us to do our part to put more food on the dinner table,” said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. “Our business and our charitable giving are united in the commitment to eradicate hunger in America.” As in years past, the majority of Walmart’s holiday giving happens locally The Walmart Foundation is donating $24 million to nonprofits in the communities Walmart’s 4,000 stores and Sam’s Club locations serve. As in past years, the Foundation will also donate an additional $1.25 million to The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign, which will fundraise at store locations nationwide November 27 - December 24. Family support We are committed to helping families in need, particularly in these unprecedented times. Throughout the year we partner with nonprofit organizations such as: Military The holidays can be a tough time for military families. We recognize the sacrifices of our deployed servicemen and women – and their families back at home. So, in 2009, through a $1.1 million donation from Walmart, we helped bring Christmas a little early to families in all branches of the military. Representatives from Operation Homefront and Wreaths Across America joined us in Fort Bragg, N.C., to launch the military portion of our Walmart Gives Back program, which included: Wreaths Across America For the second year, we donated wreaths, trucks and resources to help Wreaths Across America lay 16,000 wreaths at national cemeteries and memorial sites across the United States. Memorial displays include “a mile of memories'' at Battery Park to honor 9/11 victims and veterans from the New York City area, Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Ark., and the site of the Flight 93 crash in Shanksville, Pa. Through this partnership, we can show our gratitude to those who served and sacrificed.
Operation Homefront The economic recession made 2009 an especially difficult year for military families and their children. To help, we donated toys and books to Operation Homefront toy shops in markets with some of the highest numbers of deployed troops. Spouses of deployed military personnel got the chance to shop for free in the stores, which serve more than 3,000 military moms and dads with 10,000 military children. More than 300 associates from Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide helped organize toys and assist participants at each event. In addition, through our work with Operation Homefront, we helped give Walmart gift cards to more than 1,500 military families in 30 cities and 1,000 gift packages to the caregivers of wounded military personnel.
