Employment Practices
We use state-of-the-art hiring and promotional systems to make sure that every applicant has the opportunity to apply and be considered for any position they’re qualified for and interested in. As career opportunities continue to grow, we continually update our systems and processes to meet the demand.
An Open Door of OpportunitiesAs our career opportunities expand, presenting opportunities for both internal growth and external job openings, systems such as Career Preference continue to stay ahead of the curve to meet the growing demands of our associates. Career Preference allows associates to pre-register for positions based on their career interest. Once the position is open, associates are automatically placed in the applicant pool for the selection process for the open position. Our network of more than 7,900 hiring kiosks provides accessibility to external applicants who wish to pursue a career with us. The system has been so successful with more than 13 million job applications through the kiosks and online in 2008. We’re proud of Career preference, as it allows our associates the ability to plan their careers through job research, career-pathing and job-position previews of our stores and clubs. Improving Employment PracticesThe Employment Practices Advisory Panel (EPAP) was established in 2006 to evaluate and provide guidance regarding employment practices and Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. The Panel provides quarterly updates and best practice recommendations to the Compensation, Nominating and Governance Committee, a sub-committee of our Board of Directors. In 2008, the Panel led associate focus groups, worked with company leadership in developing diversity strategies for each division, and conducted Diversity and Inclusion benchmarking meetings with other corporate leaders such as McDonald’s, PepsiCo, and DiversityInc magazine.
