Community Giving

At Walmart, we believe in operating globally and giving back locally. We know we can make the greatest impact on our communities by supporting causes that are important to associates and customers in their own neighborhoods. We encourage our associates to support programs that make a positive difference in their communities through volunteer efforts and financial contributions, and we involve our associates in recommending how Walmart Foundation dollars are used to support causes that are important to them.

We’re proud to be a “store of the community” for the communities we serve by helping to provide financial and volunteer support to more than 100,000 charitable and community-focused organizations, and by involving our locations and the Walmart Foundation in providing opportunities for our customers and associates to give back. In all of our giving efforts, we strive to meet the unmet needs of underserved populations, and to support organizations that give individuals access to a better life.

Meharry Medical College Center

In 2008, the Walmart Foundation awarded the second portion of a $1 million grant to the Meharry Medical College Center for Women’s Health Research, the nation’s only center dedicated to the study of health disparities among women of color. The grant, which is being issued over a five-year period, will be used to help advance the Center’s work in addressing diseases that disproportionately impact women from ethnic minorities, particularly African American women.

The Center for American Progress (CAP)

The Walmart Foundation awarded $253,839 to CAP to support research and policy development, related to reducing racial and ethnic disparities in the American health care system.

Morehouse School of Medicine – Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI)

The mission of the SHLI is to develop a diverse group of new leaders, to foster and support leadership strategies, and to develop policies toward the reduction and ultimate elimination of disparities in health. The Walmart Foundation awarded a grant of $501,000 to support three SHLI fellows at the Morehouse School of Medicine Health Policy Leadership Development program.

Our community giving included significant grants, outreach and support to more than 300 minority and women constituent groups.
