Our Partnership

In 2006, the Walmart Foundation made a commitment of $5 million over five years to support the National Urban League’s Workforce Investment Demonstration Project (WIDP). The grant provides funding to 10 Urban League affiliates to develop specific workforce development programs that address the needs of the communities they serve. Participating cities include, Hudson County, NJ; Philadelphia, Washington, DC; Broward County, FL; Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Walmart’s grant also supports the Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP), a partnership between the National Urban League, corporations, government, non-profit organizations, and other institutions to loan African-American executives to participating colleges as Visiting Professors. Visiting Professors lecture in credit-bearing courses that correspond to their industries and participate in other BEEP related activities such as networking sessions, mentoring, workshops and mock job interviews.

In July 2009, Walmart announced a $6 million, three-year commitment in honor of the National Urban League’s 2010 Centennial celebration that includes programmatic, operations and marketing and advertising support for the organization.

Established in 1910, the National Urban League is devoted to empowering African-Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. There are more than 100 Urban League affiliates nationwide, providing services to millions through programs, advocacy and research aimed at workforce development, civic engagement and other issues.
