Wilmington Wal-Mart Celebrates Grand Opening
Store’s impact seen in 333 new jobs and $35,000 in charitable donations
WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 24, 2006 – With a focus on 333 new jobs, charitable and supplier support, and every day low prices, the Wal-Mart store in Wilmington will celebrate its grand opening at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Doors will open at 8 a.m. The store is located at 1251 Centerville Road.
Store features
According to Store Manager Frank Durst, the new 140,000-square foot Wal-Mart store features 36 departments including family apparel, health and beauty aids, household needs, electronics, toys, fabrics and crafts, lawn and garden supplies, jewelry and shoes. In addition, the store offers a Subway restaurant, expanded foods, a portrait studio, a one-hour photo lab, a pharmacy, a nail salon and a Smart Style hair salon. The store will also feature a family fun center and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales.
The store will be open from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week and will include eight full-service and 12 express check-out lanes
Grand opening activities
Members of the Delaware Military Academy will sing the national anthem and present the colors at the grand opening ceremony. Members of the New Castle Chamber of Commerce will cut the ribbon to the new store. Activities planned for grand opening day include appearances by the World B. Free basketball players from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and Wired 96.5 will have a live remote from 1 to 3 p.m.
Employment
The store will employ approximately 333 associates. More than 2,000 people applied for jobs at the new store, according to Durst. The national average wage at Wal-Mart for full-time hourly associates is approximately $10.11 per hour.*
“The large number of applicants for this new store doesn’t surprise me at all,” said Durst. “Great career opportunities, fantastic benefits and lasting friendships are just a few of the positive aspects of becoming a Wal-Mart associate.”
Durst started as an hourly associate nearly 14 years ago at a store in Lavale, Md.
Charitable giving
One of the primary activities of the grand opening celebration is to announce $35,000 in donations through Wal-Mart’s Good Works community involvement program to a number of organizations. The store will also have a budget to give donations away locally throughout the year.

In 2004, Wal-Mart Stores and SAM’S CLUB gave $440,035 to local causes and organizations in the communities they serve in the state of Delaware. In addition, many charities and organizations received in-kind donations and additional funds raised through stores, CLUBS and distribution centers in the amount of $163,315, for a grand total of $603,350 contributed through Wal-Mart’s presence across the state.
