Wal-Mart Opens Rosemead Supercenter; Closest Yet to Downtown L.A.

New store includes specialty foods and services; attracts more than 7,000 applicants and provides more than $40,000 to local charities

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 13, 2006 – With the promise of good jobs, shopping convenience, and every day low prices, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) today opened the doors of its newest Supercenter in Rosemead, Calif., just 10 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. With plans to bring more than 500 new jobs to the area, the store is the third in Los Angeles County and offers a mix of products that reflect the diverse population of Rosemead, with services that complement a one-stop shopping experience to save families time and money.

The new Supercenter began serving customers at 8 this morning. The store is located at 1827 Walnut Grove Avenue, at the corner of Rush Street.

7,000 Applications; 500 New Jobs
Located in a Los Angeles suburb of just over 55,000 residents, the Rosemead Supercenter has received more than 7,000 applications for the more than 500 new jobs they expect by end of this week. Most of the new jobs are full-time positions, according to store manager Jorge Lopez. Wal-Mart’s average wage for full-time hourly associates in California is $10.50 per hour.

“We were excited by the number of applications and are pleased to be bringing good jobs to this community,” said Lopez. “It makes me proud to work for this company where there truly are unlimited opportunities.” Lopez began his career with Wal-Mart as an hourly associate in 1991 at a store in another Los Angeles suburb – Redlands.

Store of the Community Features
As a part of Wal-Mart’s emphasis to offer the services and products that reflect the needs of its surrounding community, the new Supercenter will offer of a variety of ethnic foods – both Asian and Hispanic – within its 210,000-square-foot full-service grocery department, as well as a variety of organic selections.

The store includes 36 general merchandise departments, with selections and features Wal-Mart began introducing to new stores this year, including popular apparel brands Metro 7 and George. The Supercenter also contains new visible navigational signage for shopping in a larger store, lowered shelves, energy-saving skylights and earth-tone concrete and wood floors. In addition, a new home trends area features products displayed together to show design and style, while the store’s electronics section showcases the latest in computers, iPods and high-definition televisions.

The new store boasts one of Wal-Mart’s largest lawn and garden centers in the country and is the first such department to be fully detached from the rest of the store. The garden center will open in about a month. In addition, the store offers a bakery, delicatessen, frozen food, meat, seafood, dairy products and fresh produce. The store will be open to customers from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Other store features include a McDonald’s, one-hour photo lab, vision center, pharmacy, hair salon and nail salon.

As the first full-service grocery and general merchandise store in Rosemead, the new Supercenter not only offers convenience, it also promises savings of more than $2,300 per year for the average family who shops there, according to an independent study.

Charity Received Before Store Opens
In conjunction with its store opening, Wal-Mart will donate more than $40,000 in cash grants and merchandise to local organizations this month. Larger efforts to give back began Sept. 11, 2006 with $10,000 donated to the Rosemead Fire Station and newly-opened Sheriff’s Substation. Additional cash and product giveaways will follow, including several focused on helping area youth and local schools.
