New Wal-Mart Supercenter Brings Super Savings to Severn
Store relocates from Glen Burnie creating new jobs, supporting local suppliers
SEVERN, Md., Feb. 28, 2008 – The new Severn Wal-Mart Supercenter will have an immediate effect on the local community by offering savings for customers, support for local suppliers and employment for qualified job-seekers. The Wal-Mart store in Glen Burnie will relocate to its new home in Severn and will open as a Supercenter in its new location Wednesday, March 5, at 407 George Clauss Blvd.
Customer Savings on New Products and Services
Located near Quarterfield Crossing, the 203,864-square-foot Supercenter is approximately 90,000 square feet larger than the original store, according to Store Manager Adler LaFontant. The Glen Burnie store originally opened in 1992 at 7992 Crain Hwy. With the additional square footage, the store is able to carry a full line of groceries and a host of special features that provide a convenient, one-stop shopping experience for customers. The grocery section will contain bakery goods, deli foods, frozen foods, meat and dairy products and fresh produce. The store will also feature a sushi bar and an expanded selection of ethnic foods. Customers will also be able to save on apparel and accessories, fine jewelry, health and beauty aids, electronics and home entertainment equipment and toys and load bulky lawn and garden purchases in a special drive-through lane located in the lawn and garden center. The pharmacy will also save customers time with two drive-through lanes for convenient pick-up. The store will also carry some familiar local brands, such as Esskay dairy products and, just in time for Easter, Mary Sue’s Easter Eggs, a product of Mary Sue Candies of Baltimore.
Additional services in the 24-hour store include a Tire & Lube Express, a one-hour photo lab and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless sales. Leased areas in the store include a SmartStyle Family Hair Salon, a DaVi Nail salon, a branch of Woodforest Bank, an Amplifon Hearing Center and a Subway restaurant.
Relocation Creates 300 New Jobs
The store plans to employ a total of 550 associates. Approximately 300 of those jobs were created by the relocation, said LaFontant. “The associates at this store are great examples of the great jobs that are available at Wal-Mart. There are 13 associates who were here for the original opening in 1992, and 72 of our associates have been with the company for more than 10 years.” While the majority of positions are full time, Wal-Mart benefits are available to both full- and part-time associates -- including healthcare insurance with no lifetime maximum. Wal-Mart also offers a 401(k) plan and profit sharing contributions, whether an associate contributes or not, store discount cards, company performance-based bonuses, stock purchase program and life insurance. The national average wage at Wal-Mart for full-time hourly associates is $10.65 per hour.*
Grand Opening Grants Help Store Give Back to the Community
As is the tradition at Wal-Mart store openings, the Severn store will award grants to local community and charitable groups that have a positive affect on the community. A total of $18,000 will be distributed to several groups, including some with a focus on education. “All stores that open in March have dedicated a portion of their grants to organizations that promote adolescent literacy. This store has chosen to give a grant to the local chapter of The Salvation Army to help fund an after-school program to help kids improve their reading skills,” said LaFontant.
Like all Wal-Mart stores, the new store will provide contributions throughout the year to help neighborhood organizations. Opening Celebration
The community is invited to attend the new store’s grand opening ceremony at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 5. Doors to the new store will open at 8 a.m. Additional grand opening activities planned throughout the day include product samples, giveaways and character appearances. Activities are planned to continue throughout the weekend.
