New Edgewood Supercenter Brings One-Stop Shopping Closer to Home

Shoppers to find more value in convenient new format

EDGEWOOD, N.M., March 3, 2008 – Edgewood residents and local officials are anticipating the upcoming opening of the first area Wal-Mart Supercenter. Added savings and a convenient layout coupled with the store’s sustainable features and mountain-lodge accents help to connect this store with the needs of this Sandia Mountain community. Located at 66 State Road 344 directly off of Interstate 40, the store will open its doors on Friday, March 7, and will provide customers a one-stop shopping destination for everyday needs including groceries to lawn and garden supplies to $4 prescriptions.

The store’s façade reflects the area’s architecture with natural colored brick, stacked stones and accents of wooden beams, while the inside features earth-toned colors, wide aisles, lower shelving and easy-to-read signage to help shoppers find just what they need. Sustainable features are showcased throughout the store including skylights, light-emitting diode (LED) refrigerated case lighting, motion-sensor lighting in the freezer cases, recycled building materials and motion-sensor water faucets and lighting in the restrooms.

“We have everything our residents need in one stop,” says Store Manager James Torres. “Bringing opportunities for our friends and neighbors to save money and live better is just one way we will be a partner to this community.”

Customers throughout the East Mountain area have waited anxiously for the 211,617-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter to open in order to reduce traveling to Albuquerque. “This will help out the town financially, no doubt,” says Edgewood Mayor Howard Calkins. “Now the dollars that were spent in travel and time can shift either to savings for our residents or to shopping locally, bringing even more retail tax revenue to town.”

The store officially opens its doors at 8 a.m. In addition to the Edgewood store, a Wal-Mart Supercenter will open Wednesday, March 5, in Bernalillo.

Variety and Low Prices at the Wal-Mart Supercenter
Wal-Mart customers from Edgewood and the surrounding area can shop for groceries, purchase custom cakes in the bakery, and enjoy a wide selection in the store’s delicatessen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The store will have dry and frozen food sections, meat and dairy products, fresh produce and liquor sales. The store’s general merchandise departments include a full lawn and garden center, health and beauty aids, sporting goods, books, toys, electronics, fine jewelry, apparel and accessories, and an infant section.

For added convenience, a vision center, a Tire and Lube Express with a bay to service recreational vehicles, a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales and a one-hour photo lab will also be highlights of the new store. Additional leased space and services include a McDonald’s restaurant, a SmartStyle Family Hair Salon and a Regal Nails Salon. The store’s pharmacy will also feature two convenient drive-through lanes and will offer Wal-Mart’s expanded $4 prescription program.

“We anticipate many customers turning to our pharmacy for prescriptions to manage many conditions,” says Torres. “We want our local residents to know they can come to rely on our pharmacy which brings the Wal-Mart prices they expect.”

The $4 prescriptions are now available for most commonly treated medical conditions. In fact, Wal-Mart’s program offers a quality prescription product for up to 95 percent of the prescriptions written in the majority of therapeutic categories.

The Edgewood Supercenter will also provide more jobs to the area. The store will employ a total of 450 associates. The national average wage for full-time hourly Wal-Mart associates is $10.65 per hour.*

Manager Torres started his career with Wal-Mart in 2001 in Belen. He recently was manager of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Albuquerque, and has also worked for Wal-Mart in Colorado.
