Wal-Mart riding green bandwagon

BERKELEY -- Using 100 percent renewable energy such as solar roofs, creating zero waste by demanding that suppliers use biodegradable packaging and selling products that sustain the environment such as compact fluorescent bulbs are top priorities of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., its sustainability officer said here Tuesday.

"We have 66,000 suppliers, and by changing how they get their materials and dispose of them, we can have an enormous impact," said Matt Kistler, Wal-Mart's senior vice president for sustainability, addressing a packed crowd at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.
