Wal-Mart Supercenter Keeps Pace with Camby
Local organizations benefit from community grants CAMBY, Ind., June 4, 2008 – Wal-Mart opens its newest Supercenter in the Indianapolis area Wednesday, June 11, offering one-stop shopping convenience to residents in the booming Camby community. The store opens with a big community impact, bringing 500 planned new jobs and $18,000 in donations to charitable organizations. It also signifies Wal-Mart’s ongoing commitment to reflect the preferences of the communities it serves and to conserve energy with an energy-efficient store design. The new Camby Supercenter is located at 8191 Upland Way, off Indiana Highway 67 in the fast-growing Heartland Crossing development. The retailer will serve as an anchor in the continued development of the 1,500-acre mixed- use community that includes portions of Marion, Hendricks and Morgan counties. “We’re located just off a main road that many residents travel every day,” said Store Manager Doug Cermak. “Our store is incredibly convenient. Residents in the area can complete their shopping needs and errands with one simple trip.” The new store has environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The freezer cases, restrooms, storage and workspaces of the store have LED lights and sensors that automatically shut off the lights when those areas are unoccupied or customers are not present. LED lighting throughout the store operates 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting. Customers will notice hundreds of skylights, which harvest daylight and reduce the amount of energy required to light the store by up to 75 percent daily. In addition, the cement used in the store’s concrete flooring is made with recycled materials and the floor’s finish reduces the need for chemical cleaners. Wal-Mart Contributes $18,000 to Community Organizations As part of Wal-Mart’s commitment to the communities in which they operate, the store is demonstrating its support of the area by contributing $18,000 to local charitable organizations. That support includes a $5,000 contribution to the Boys and Girls Club of Morgan County to help with the organization’s after-school tutoring programs. The city of Mooresville will receive $4,000 to purchase rescue equipment for its fire department and support activities at its family aquatic center. (Editors note: For a complete list of grant recipients, please see page three of this release.) “We have an incredible opportunity to impact our community with more than great values,” Cermak said. “By providing grants to local organizations we have a chance to give back to our customers.” The grand opening grants are in addition to a recent $10,000 donation the company gave to DAMAR Services in memory of a Wal-Mart associate who volunteered at its main campus. The store plans to give donations away locally throughout the year. Area organizations can contact the store to inquire about grants and opportunities to raise money outside store locations throughout the year. New Store Brings Local Jobs, Opportunities Approximately 500 local residents now have new jobs at the Camby store. “It makes me proud to work for this company where there are unlimited opportunities,” Cermak said. “Many associates joined because they know they have the opportunity for a long-lasting career at Wal-Mart.” Cermak is one of eight associates who have worked for Wal-Mart for more than 10 years, with one associate having more than 20 years with the retailer. One-Stop Shopping Convenience for the Entire Family The new 206,719-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter features a full line of groceries, more than 30 merchandise departments and several time-saving features and services. Nearby residents who are focused on furnishing their homes will enjoy shopping in the store’s home furnishings department, which will feature products from Wal-Mart’s new Canopy™ brand, a line of durable, affordable furniture and home accessories. Products in the home furnishings department will be organized by room and will feature more visible signage and displays showing how the products coordinate in a given room. The store’s lawn and garden center has a drive-through loading area for customers picking up plants, stone, mulch and other landscaping supplies. The new Supercenter will also have a Wal-Mart MoneyCenter to offer customers convenient access to low-cost money services, including check cashing, money orders, bill payment and money transfers. The store’s pharmacy has two drive-through lanes to serve customers dropping off and picking up prescriptions. For added convenience, there will be a Tire & Lube Express, a vision center, a digital photo processing center, a family fun center and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales. Leased areas and services include a SmartStyle Family Hair Care salon, a Subway restaurant and a branch of Woodforest National Bank. The store will be open 24 hours a day. Ribbon-cutting Celebration 7:30 a.m., June 11 Community and business leaders will join Wal-Mart associates for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, and doors to the new store will open at 8 a.m. Throughout the day, activities will include numerous product samples, character appearances and giveaways.
