Durham-Area Residents To Save More With Two New Walmarts
Stores bring 530 new jobs to the community DURHAM, N.C., June 10, 2009 – Two new Walmarts will open this month in the Durham area, introducing the company’s next generation of store design and customer experience. A new store will open in Morrisville, and the store formerly located at 1525 Glenn School Road in Durham has been relocated to bring local shoppers savings on a full line of groceries. Customers will find fresh produce, favorite brands and unbeatable prices among the stores’ wide aisles. Both stores will open to customers at 8 a.m., Wednesday, June 17. They are located at 3500 Roxboro St. in Durham and at 1001 Shiloh Glenn Drive in Morrisville. Economic Impact Includes 530 New Jobs The stores will employ a combined total of 740 associates. The Morrisville store will employ more than 400 associates and the Durham store will employ approximately 340 associates, including 130 new positions added as a result of the relocation. Chris Cardwell and Greg Blackwell are store managers at the Durham and Morrisville stores respectively. According to Cardwell, 12 associates have worked for Walmart for more than 10 years. Cardwell began his Walmart career as a sales associate in 1995 at a store in Nacogdoches, Texas. Approximately 20 associates at the new Morrisville store have worked for Walmart for more than 10 years, said Blackwell. Layout Improves Customer Experience In recent months, Walmart has taken major steps to refresh its stores, merchandise and customer experience. The improvements have all come together in the company’s newest stores, such as the Durham and Morrisville stores, bringing customers faster service, a friendlier shopping experience and cleaner stores. Shoppers looking to grab a quick lunch or dinner will have more choices in the stores’ conveniently located deli and meal solutions areas including fresh baked pizza, sushi and take home meals. The stores also feature expanded produce departments and an expanded assortment of dry grocery items including baking goods. The new Walmart stores are designed to make shopping easy for customers. The layout creates an open shopping environment with wider aisles that contain no product displays. A bright interior color palette creates an inviting shopping experience and helps define the stores’ merchandise areas. Lower shelving creates an improved sightline and directional signage on every aisle helps customers find what they are looking for quickly. In each store, Walmart also combined the customer service desk, site to store pick-up location and photo lab in one area near the entrance. Customers now have easy access to these services, as well as associates on hand to help meet their needs. Community Organizations Benefit from $43,000 in Grand-Opening Grants As part of Walmart’s commitment to the communities in which it operates, a combined total of $43,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation will be presented during the stores’ grand-opening celebrations. Grant recipients include Meals On Wheels of Durham, Green Hope High School, Charles Ray III Diabetes Association, Morrisville Fire and Rescue Department, City of Durham Fire Department and eight other organizations. Stores’ Design Incorporates Environmentally Friendly Features The Durham and Morrisville stores, like all new Walmartlude energy-efficient technology and environmentally friendly features to reduce energy and water consumption and minimize waste. The stores’ skylights harvest daylight and reduce the amount of energy required to light the stores by up to 75 percent daily. LED lighting throughout the stores operate 70 percent more efficiently than traditional fluorescent lighting. Low-flow toilets and faucets reduce the water used in the bathrooms, and the stores’ concrete floors include recycled materials. Ribbon-Cutting Celebrations 7:30 a.m., June 17 Community and business leaders will join Walmart associates at both stores at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. At the Durham store, Gail Wagstaff, a store associate, will perform the national anthem, and Terry Sturdavant, also a store associate, will lead the invocation. Throughout the day, customers at both stores will be able to enjoy character appearances, product samples and giveaways. About Walmart Stores Inc.
