Walmart taps color, brands to lure shoppers

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (MarketWatch) -- At Walmart's first store nearby the company's Bentonville, Ark., headquarters, laptops from Dell to Acer were laid out -- instead of locked inside display cases -- for consumers to try.

Other products, from mascara and bath towels to video games and T-shirts, were displayed either by colors or color-coded to spur interest or make it easier for shoppers to find what they were looking for.

As Walmart, touting its "Save Money. Live Better" tagline, has won new budget-conscious shoppers in the economic downturn, the company is making aisles wider, lowering shelf heights and removing products that used to occupy the center of the aisles to make it easier for shoppers to navigate and find products.
