High-Efficiency medium-temperature refrigerated cases with doors and LED lighting Refrigeration System
The HE.1 store’s common loop refrigeration system incorporates water-cooled condensers, distributed roof mounted units with loop piping design, electronic valves, medium temperature doors, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in freezer and medium-temperature refrigerated cases. By using a loop-piping design, the integrated water-source system requires significantly less copper piping to be installed and reduces the overall refrigerant charge in the store.
At the Kansas City HE.1 store, Walmart chose to install doors on select medium-temperature refrigerated grocery cases. These doors are identical to those used in other refrigerated and freezer sections, but are not commonly used in the deli and dairy areas. The doors are designed to keep cold air in, maintain a comfortable ambient air temperature and save energy. These display cases include LEDs and ultra high-efficiency fan motors, further reducing energy consumption.

Garden Center HVLS Fan Garden Center Cooling Technology
The Garden Center at the Kansas City HE.1 store utilizes normal exhaust air from the store to keep associates comfortable at the checkout counters. Typically, the Garden Center checkout position is stationary and can become uncomfortable during hot summer conditions. This system provides cooler tempered air, normally exhausted to the outside to meet ventilation demand, and blows it directly on cashiers through adjustable fans.
The rest of the Garden Center uses large, 12 foot diameter, high volume low velocity (HVLS) fans to provide a comfortable environment for customers moving through the area. These Garden Center enhancements are now part of the prototype for all new Walmart Supercenters.

Pump package boiler room interior The Kansas City HE.1 store is at optimal efficiency during the winter because 100 percent of the refrigeration heat, normally rejected to the outside air, is reclaimed through the water system and provided to the store via water source heat pumps. These heat pumps, similar to heat pumps in many homes, extract the heat out of the water loop and deliver it to the space.
Like other Walmart stores, additional waste heat from the refrigeration system is used to heat domestic hot water for restrooms and kitchen areas. Nationwide, approximately 70 percent of the hot water needs for Walmart Supercenters, Sam’s Clubs and Neighborhood Markets are generated this way, saving enough energy to provide hot water for more than 30,000 U.S. homes.

High-Efficiency LED lighting in freezer case
LED-Driven Case Lighting All of the freezer and refrigerated door cases at the Kansas City HE.1 store are illuminated by LED lighting. LEDs consume less than half the energy of fluorescent bulbs, last 3-4 times longer, produce significantly less heat than traditional case lighting and contain no environmentally harmful mercury. The installation of LED technology in these cases is a direct learning from Walmart’s Aurora and McKinney experimental stores. LED technology is expected to add a 2 to 3 percent energy reduction in the HE.1 store, and will be rolled-out in new Walmart stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Clubs beginning this month. More than half of Walmart stores use LED lighting in all exterior building signage, which can provide an extended life span of 12 to 20 years per bulb; saving energy and reducing the number of florescent lamps produced and disposed of each year.

Pump package boiler room exterior Pump Package Boiler Room
With the knowledge that water has approximately four times the heat-carrying capacity of air, the HE.1 store was designed to use water for heat transference between systems, which is far more efficient than conventional air cooled systems. Here a common water system is circulated to all air conditioning/heating and refrigeration units through the custom designed pumping package.
Walmart chose a custom designed, pre-manufactured pump and boiler package because of the quick installation and minimal maintenance needs. System diversity is optimized by using variable speed controls on all pumps, thereby lowering the required pumping energy.
The Kansas City HE.1 store is at optimal efficiency during the winter because 100 percent of the refrigeration heat, normally rejected to the outside air, is reclaimed through the water system and provided to the store via water source heat pumps.
