Baby Abuelita
The will of three women seeking to fill a void.
For three working mothers, the thought of creating a product and having it sold in Walmart stores was far from their minds, until the opportunity presented itself. Hilda Argilagos-Jimenez, Carol Fenster and Laura Santamaria took time out of their busy schedules to tell us how they embarked on their business venture. Tell our readers how Baby Abuelita was created. Hilda: I was on vacation singing Spanish nursery rhymes to my children. When a lady, whose husband was also of Hispanic descent, asked if I would write them down for her family. As I started writing, I realized that I could not remember all of the words. It was heartbreaking because these songs were a part of my childhood. I was even more disturbed when other friends and family members could not remember the same songs. On a youth dance trip, I shared my story with Carol. A week later, she called to suggest that I put all the songs in the form of a doll. She even suggested that the dolls be grandparents. I was not amused or interested at the time. However, Carol was persistent and asked me about the idea on several occasions. Eventually, I recognized the appeal of Baby Abuelita to children, especially Hispanic children. How was Baby Abuelita developed from a concept to a marketable product? Carol: We all drew from our areas of expertise. Hilda recommended a local Hispanic artist for drawing the characters. Laura and I ensured that the business aspect of things were in order. Then, we took the Baby Abuelita to four Walmart stores in the Miami area; the toy department managers loved it and put it on the shelves. The Baby Abuelita dolls have expanded into many more Walmart stores across the country and continue to show great growth. For more information, visit babyabuelita.com.
