Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent not-for-profit organization whose aim is to create a lasting relationship between shareholders, purchasers and corporations surrounding the mutual concern of climate change. CDP’s goal is to facilitate a dialogue, supported by quality information, to stimulate a rational response to climate change.

This partnership between CDP and Walmart is a very significant milestone in corporate action to mitigate climate change.

Every year since 2002, CDP has sent a questionnaire to the world's largest publicly-owned companies eliciting detailed information on the risks and opportunities posed by climate change. These responses and reports serve as the largest and most comprehensive database of strategies from the world's largest corporations regarding the impact of climate change on shareholder value.

In September 2007, Walmart announced a partnership with the CDP to measure the amount of energy that’s used to create certain products we sell, and to encourage suppliers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Combining CDP’s carbon reporting expertise and Walmart’s experience with supply chain efficiency, the partnership will focus on ways to remove non-renewable energy from products. Walmart hopes to use the CDP questionnaire process to engage its supply chain to report on climate change-relevant information, such as greenhouse gas emissions data, emissions reduction targets and climate change strategy. This initiative will significantly expand CDP's reach into the private sector as well as to small and medium-sized businesses.
