Economic Impacts
In 2006, we saved American households an average of more than $2,500An important part of sustainable growth is promoting economic development and opportunity in the communities where we build. We do this through the jobs we bring to communities. We also do it by helping people save money. We make lower prices happenWhen we move into a community, our low prices impact not just the people who shop in our stores, but even those who don’t. Studies have shown that when a Wal-Mart moves into a community, supermarkets lower their prices in response to the prices we offer. We want to bring jobs and opportunities to communities that need it most.In 2006, we introduced the Jobs and Opportunity Zone program. Through the program, 10 designated Wal-Mart stores will work with surrounding local businesses, suppliers and community organizations to direct grant money, and spur job creation and economic development in the surrounding neighborhood. Through the program, small businesses enjoy benefits like free advertising on the Wal-Mart in-store radio network and in local newspapers. To date we have opened nine of our 10 designated zones. They are located in: - Chicago, Illinois
- Cleveland, Ohio
- El Mirage, Arizona
- Landover Hills, Maryland
- Portsmouth, Virginia
- Richmond, California
- Sanger, California
- Indianapolis, Indiana
- Decatur, Georgia
