Greenhouse Gas

Every company has a responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as it can. Walmart is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and we are working with our suppliers and customers to do the same.

Goals

  • Design and open a viable store prototype that is 25-30 percent more energy efficient and will produce up to 30 percent fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2009 globally (2005 Baseline).
  • Reduce GHG at our existing store, club and distribution center base around the world by 20 percent by 2012 (2005 Baseline).
  • Eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Walmart's global supply chain by the end of 2015.

Objectives

Walmart is actively engaged in reducing our carbon footprint. Our climate program has four inter-related components:

  1. Reduce emissions within Walmart’s direct control, including operations of our stores, clubs, distribution centers, truck fleet, cars and airplanes.
  2. Help our suppliers reduce the emissions associated with the manufacture, shipment, and use of their products.
  3. Help our customers reduce emissions by offering more energy efficient products. Offer more environmentally preferable disposal and reclamation options for those products.
  4. Be actively engaged in the public policy debate and discussions on curbing GHG emissions.

We are investing in renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency in our facilities and trucks, reducing waste from our store and club operations, working with suppliers to take carbon out of product manufacturing, packaging, transportation, and use, and supporting legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate and Walmart's Operations

We have reduced our energy intensity by sales volume, however, we recognize the need to further reduce our environmental impact whenever possible.

Climate and Walmart's Suppliers

We continue working with our suppliers and others in the supply chain to reduce their carbon emissions.

Climate and Customers & Members

In addition to reducing the energy consumption in our own stores and Sam's Club facilities, we are taking steps to help our customers and members reduce the footprint of their homes.

Climate Policy

Walmart engages with policymakers at all levels on climate change with testimony before congress, conversations with government officials and NGOs, as well as numerous public statements
