Faded Glory T-shirts

Transitional and organic cotton farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that can contaminate land, air and water and harm people, animals and the environment. When you purchase transitional cotton you are rewarding farmers for transitioning their practices from traditional farming to organic methods. At Walmart and Faded Glory our commitment is to offer our customers quality products that are affordable, ethically sourced and environmentally friendly. The Faded Glory brand offers a variety of apparel in both organic and transitional cotton.

What is Transitional Cotton?

Transitional cotton refers to the special transition process that traditional farmers must go through for their cotton to be certified as organic. During the three-year conversion process, farmers adhere to the same practices and standards as organic cotton farmers. Their crop, known as transitional cotton, costs the same to grow, but does not bring in the same premium as organic cotton.

At Walmart, we made a commitment to the organic cotton industry by purchasing more than 12 million pounds of transitional cotton and paying suppliers the same price as they would receive for certified organic cotton. We see it as a way we can encourage farmers to adopt practices that protect water, soil, humans and habitats from exposure to synthetic chemicals and pesticides.

What’s the Net Impact?

To grow a pound of cotton takes on average .1188 ounces of synthetic chemicals. So our purchase of 12 million pounds of transitional cotton will save over 89,000 pounds (over 40 tons) of synthetic chemicals from going into the earth. This purchase helped over 43,000 acres of farm land to be farmed with organic methods.
