Earth Month 2009In spring 2009, Walmart is celebrating Earth Month around the world as part of our global commitment to sustainability. Stores from Canada to China are unveiling products that help both the environment and customers’ wallets, hosting community events with local governments and organizations and launching associate activities. China Central America ArgentinaStores in Argentina are launching 376 eco-friendly products and working with several suppliers, including Dell, GE, P&G and Unilever, to create educational in-store displays about environmental issues. BrazilFor the first time, our stores in Brazil are turning off the lights in areas of the stores as part of Earth Hour, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. CanadaCanadian stores are marking Earth Hour by reducing sales floor lighting by one-third for the entire day, and more than 10,000 associates have pledged to curb their usage at home as part of a Personal Sustainability Project. Stores are also challenging one another to sell the most For the Greener Good products. Central AmericaWalmart Central America is launching a reforestation campaign with local non-governmental organizations, using the tagline, “Your actions transform the planet.” ChinaWe’re partnering with P&G to help one million customers plant 10,000 trees in 2009. Through a promotion with Wrigley, shoppers who buy reusable bags get free Skittles candy, and those who return Coca-Cola bottles can earn free tee shirts. IndiaBharti Walmart is launching several initiatives in India, including "Live and Let Live" to help children learn how to take care of their bodies and the environment, and the Nokia Take-Back Event, in which Nokia plants a tree in India for every phone returned for recycling. The Nokia Event will be executed in Bharti Retail's Easyday stores. JapanIn Japan, our Seiyu stores are co-sponsoring the “Earth Day Orange Project” with Be Good Café to help regenerate abandoned tangerine farms. Customers and volunteers pick fruit at the farms, and stores sell juice from the harvest at Earth Day Tokyo 2009 events. In the future, Seiyu stores will sell citrus fruits from the farms. MexicoWe are hosting a local store event with the Environmental Secretary to highlight Mexico’s Earth Month activities. Puerto RicoStores in Puerto Rico are unveiling 146 eco-friendly products, including Bio Babies biodegradable diapers and are switching to re-usable plastic bins instead of cartons for local meat deliveries. We’re also launching a massive plastic bags recycling campaign and selling reusable bags that feature works from local artists and the Ponce Art Museum Collection. United StatesWe’re kicking off our Earth Day, Every Day School Challenge program by launching a website for schools to showcase the small changes they’re already making to create a greener planet. Friends, family and faculty can vote for their favorite ideas; the winning school will receive a $20,000 cash grant from Walmart to further their green efforts. |
