Expanding solar power at Walmart stores in California
The sun is an incredible source of not just heat and light but also clean energy. Walmart’s commitment to sustainability includes finding more ways to use renewable energy in our stores, clubs and distribution centers. As such, we are excited to expand our solar power program in California. In 2009-2010, we are installing solar panels on 10 - 20 of our stores, which adds to the 18 solar arrays already in place. Once complete, the combined solar arrays will: - Generate up to 32 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy per year - enough to power more than 2,600 homes*
- Avoid producing more than 22,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year –equivalent to taking more than 4,000 cars off the road per year*
- Provide 20 - 30 percent of each location’s total electric energy needs
Using solar power is helping us reach our goal to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy. It also makes tremendous business sense, especially in these economic conditions. Thanks to Governor Schwarzenegger’s leadership, California is an excellent state for us to expand our use of renewable energy and thus create more green jobs. Our solar project will create about 130 jobs for engineers, designers and installer technicians in California. As construction nears completion throughout California, we will evaluate expanding the program to additional sites.
