Wood and Paper

Our Wood and Paper Network focuses on bringing our customers products made from sustainably harvested trees at an affordable price.

Goal

  • Eliminate wood from our supply chain that comes from unwanted sources by 2013.

Objectives and Actions

  • In order to meet our goal to eliminate wood from our supply chain that comes from unwanted sources by 2013, we partnered with the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN).
    • The GFTN aims to eliminate illegal logging and improve the management of valuable and threatened forests.
  • Together with the GFTN and its network and expertise in 36 countries, we will:
    • work with our suppliers to improve the traceability and transparency of our wood and paper supply chain, and
    • move toward even more sustainable sourcing.
  • The agreement we entered into with GFTN requires us to meet certain time-based deliverables which include:
    • conducting a preliminary baseline assessment of our wood product supply chain – which was completed in 2008.
    • adopting a wood purchasing policy.

Latest News:

  • The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) awarded Walmart 4 out 5 stars on the 2008 Garden Furniture Scorecard, acknowledging 71 to 99 percent of our wooden outdoor furniture or products are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as being sourced from forests working toward FSC-certification.
