Alternative Fuels

In an effort to reach our goal of being supplied by 100 percent renewable energy, our Alternative Fuels Network is incorporating renewable fuels into our retail fuel locations and in our fleet of trucks.

Goals

  • We see many benefits to renewable fuels. These fuels can:
    • produce fewer emissions compared to traditional gasoline and diesel,
    • help reduce our company’s emissions,
    • support farmers across the nation, and
    • reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
  • Ethanol is used in many states as an additive to gasoline to make gasoline burn cleaner. All conventional vehicles can use ethanol when blended in a form called E10 (10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline).
    • By the end of 2008, we blended approximately 65 million gallons of ethanol into the fuel we used or sold.
    • The fuel we sell at Sam’s Clubs in 34 states is blended with some renewable fuel.
    • As of January 2009, 53 percent of the fuel we sell contains some renewable fuel components.
  • Diesel trucks and vehicles can run on renewable biodiesel blends. Biodiesel can be made from multiple feed stocks and compared to traditional diesel, produces fewer:
    • particulate matter,
    • carbon monoxide, and
    • sulfur dioxide emissions.
  • We are testing several different biodiesel blends in our private truck fleet, and are committed to finding consistent, high-quality products that meet our stringent requirements. We hope to eventually expend this offering to our retail locations.
  • Auto makers are providing innovation in alternative fueled vehicles. Whether "Flex Fuel" vehicles that can run on gasoline or gasoline containing various amounts of ethanol or alternatives such as plug in hybrids, as a retail vendor of gasoline, Sam's Club is focused on:
    • investing in research, development, and equipment that will enable us to bring alternative fuels safely to our Members.
    • engaging with the equipment industry, auto industry, and renewable fuel suppliers to provide solutions to expand alternative fuels to the marketplace.
  • Walmart is committed to exploring innovative fuels and finding viable alternatives to fossil fuels such as:
    • cellulosic ethanol,
    • liquid natural gas,
    • algae-derived biodiesel, and
    • hydrogen.
